EXHIBITION: auf.einander.bauen. BAUGRUPPEN IN DER STADT (Co-housing in Berlin)
“Auf.Einander.Bauen_Buagruppen in der Stadt” presented, in 2007, the very first self-initiated co-housing projects in Berlin, for which the city is widely known today. The exhibition, publication and discussions helped to ignite this movement by bringing architects, potential clients, politicians and decision makers (banks) together.
„Auf.Einander.Bauen“ makes a case for co-housing in the inner-city. The high quality, individual architectural solutions of co-housing models present new potentials for a sustainable urban development. Through the process of building together, the residents develop a sense of identity with their house and neighbours and become actively involved in the community. Co-housing is an alternative that makes living in the inner-city viable for families with children and other people with special needs. For the exhibition and publication Auf.Einander.Bauen, twelve best-practice projects in Berlin were analysed, that stand for the spectrum of residential buildings that have been produced in recent years by co-housing groups. How does co-housing function? Which legal forms can work? Who has been building what kinds of projects, in what area of the city? And what are the problems that need to be considered? All of the projects present convincing, high quality architectural solutions. The exhibition was opened on March 30th 2007 by the Senator for Urban Development to Berlin. Over 800 guests came to the opening and the exhibition was seen by over 3000 visitors.

Emerging Identities EAST: Exhibition and Design
Berlin stands foremost as the connecting point between the East and the West, serving as the reference point to deepen dialogue with our neighbours in Central and Eastern European cities, with their rich architectural traditions and their new contemporary architectural scene. The focus is on the young generation of architects and their built projects, who are shaping the architectural culture in their countries.
Exhibition Design
This exhibition presents thirty built projects, in detail, on the wall panels. These buildings embody, independently from their country of origin, strong conceptual thinking and consequent implementation of the design concept. These projects are ordered according to building typology, starting with public buildings; museums, galleries, schools and sports facilities, followed by housing; private and social; and finally commercial buildings.
Nine Lightboxes or ‘Country Islands’ provide an overview, introducing young architectural offices with their built projects. Here, it is readable; what and how much is being built in the single states, and in which urban environment. Under ‘Favourites’, participating architects were asked to select a building of relevance from his/her country in order to give reference to precedents and buildings that the young architects find inspiring or noteworthy.
The exhibited projects clearly show that the current architecture of the presented countries develops out of an intense cultural debate fueled by both rich traditions and architectural tendencies at a national and international level. The presented projects do not represent a specific style that can be named, but rather have in common: the clear implementation of convincing conceptual answers to diverse building problems, that are based on a rich architectural heritage.
Emerging Identities -EAST! is an ongoing project. The exhibition will travel throughout Europe in order to underline the goal of international exchange. The two-day opening symposium ‘Positions’ and a country-specific accompanying program deepen certain perspectives. The communication started there and hopefully will be continued in the architectural magazines, galleries and most importantly at the offices of the architects themselves.

ECOSISTEMA URBANO Interview
The social media play a large role in your work; communication (Blog/TV/Network), the activation of public space, citizen participation, user activation. This is an aspect that goes beyond traditional architecture. How exactly to you come to utilize the media in your work? Is there a pattern to this: do you generate projects with the use of media, or do you integrate media into your projects?
We think the way to work on ecology is by improving education and knowledge. Our blog is an open platform for the interchange of knowledge and experiences from professionals with different backgrounds from all over the world. Everyone learns from each other, anyone can contribute with his / her own experience. We believe sharing is sustainable and our blog contributes in that sense. …. read more in the interview

PLASMA STUDIO Interview and Office Portrait
Your projects explore new ways to translate space and to form an innovative solution to the architectural brief. Throughout these projects, from small to large scale, you have succeeded in developing and keeping a consistent architectural attitude. How would you define “innovation” or “research” in your work? What do you find is the most important aspect of a project and what makes it successful?
The initial conceptual phase is very important: we try to set up a clear concept which is the base for decisions along all the planning process. -Every decision taken has to stand/hold against the conceptual base in order to reach a high degree of coherence. Our work is an attempt to employ the visual in relation to bodily experience and awareness..…..read more in the interview:

The main facade and entrance to the DAZ Building complex stood empty and unused for years. My goal was to activate this space and transform it into an exhibition forum for young architects.
Plasma Studio "Nodal Landscapes" in the FORMULA_X Series
In physics the term ‘plasma’ describes a particular state of matter in which energy is readily conducted through a material – the fluid spaces of Plasma Studio’s architecture work by the same principle. Folding space into space, the architects draw landscapes into buildings, streets into facades, inside to outside. Transformative tectonics set spaces, planes and bodies into unforeseen relationships that challenge conventional topographies and spatial codes.
For the last 10 years the office, currently based in London, Southern Tyrol and Beijing, has been widely recognized as one of the leading international architecture and design practices of the emerging generation. From small scale installations to large scale master planning, Plasma Studio’s projects bear strongly the mark of a digital design process. Propelled by the partners’ academic research and teaching at the Architectural Association in London. Plasma Studio develops architectural solutions by mediating between the scales of topography & context on the one hand, and sensory & physical relationships on the other. Their holistic design process enables an elastic response to completely varied contextual conditions and assignments. The exhibition at the DAZ presents their characteristic approach within a jump in scale ; from built projects in Europe to recent work - in - progress planning in China.

ECOSISTEMA URBANO in the FORMULA_X Series
Ecosistema Urbano’s name is program : Their projects combine architecture, urbanism, engineering and sociology to strive for a ‘creative urban sustainability’. The focus of their work is on the complex phenomenon of the city, which they react to (or activate) through innovative, creative and holistic interventions. The interdisciplinary office from Madrid is an international consultant on sustainable urban development for cities and regions. Public space is thereby a central issue : Ecosistema Urbano catalyses urban processes that help citizens to change their own environment through proactive interventions.
The work of Ecosistema Urbano defines new boundaries of the profession of architecture and urban planning : They are moderators, develop strategies, systems and social media interfaces for a spurring on urbanity. With their own social network, blog and web - TV, Ecosistema Urbano offers various platforms to bring people together and to share knowledge about sustainable urban development and ideas for the city.
Designing processes and situations where the relations between people can be optimized is Ecosistema Urbano’s key to a successful project. Their exhibition at the DAZ will visualize, through a classical 3 D optical system, the process and strategies for a selection of recent work.

AFF Architects "In Love, To:" in the FORMULA_X Series
The work of AFF is based on the understanding of architecture as an object, something sculptural. This view manifests itself already during the development process of their projects. AFF’s work develops through a process of designing in which they use trusted procedures. For AFF, this means: Producing and simultaneously constantly deciding, correcting, refining. Every step can be a new source of inspiration; every intermediate result creates new reactions and is part of an evolution.
But, where does the process begin? Where does it end? AFF would like to show the very beginning: It is the memories and the impressions that, at a first glance do not seem to have any influence on decisions, but indeed play a role beyond the beginning of a project. The process is determined by objects and images that have a strong character and their own past. It is the mysteriousness of the stories behind these objects that provokes AFF: with their own logic and charm the loved objects and images entice to anew. In Love, To :
