MY CITY – Symposium on making my own city, Strategies for appropriating urban space. In Essen, Germany

How do I make my city my own? “Urban space for all” and “the right to urban life” are slogans that came up again and again over the past years. But what could be a practical approach to appropriation of and participation in urban space apart from revolt and protest? As keynote speaker, sociologist Harald Welzer, a specialist in issues of correlating everyday life and protest, will open the symposium. Not least his book published last year Selbst Denken. Eine Anleitung zum Widerstand (Thinking for yourself. Instructions for opposition) and the ensuing high response in the media corroborate the importance of individual participation in an environment that is becoming more and more complex.

Urbane Künste Ruhr is organising a symposium this year in the truest sense of the word:

A symposium where participants sit around themed tables with international experts, scientists, urban planners, activists and artists. Workshops, podium discussions and lectures complement the programme, which is dedicated to appropriation strategies in urban space.

On this occasion, Urbane Künste Ruhr have invited researcher and curator Imanuel Schipper (trans4mator.net) to curate the meeting and act as host together with Katja Aßmann, artistic director of Urbane Künste Ruhr.
