SELFMADE CITY. Berlin: Self-Initiated Urban Living And Architectural Interventions – Launch Event on Feb. 15th, 2013

Posted on 31. March 2013 by kristienring

The self-determined design of living and working spaces, be it in the form of co-housing, co-op’s, co-working spaces or other project forms, has produced an architectural diversity and quality in Berlin over the last fifteen years that is exemplary. On the other-hand, the term co-housing has become inflated and now also the focus of public criticism. SELFMADE CITY makes a case for differentiating; looking more closely at the specific qualities of self-initiated projects. SELFMADE CITY presents the evolving condition in Berlin, including a survey of over 120 projects, an analysis of the qualities and potentials of these projects as well as 50 best-practice case studies. On their own accord, Selfmade projects have realized important criteria for creating socially oriented, sustainable urban developments and also provide important visions for the future. Now it is on the agenda to learn from the experiences and the Best-Practice examples –how mixed-use, lively urban quarters, shared spaces and long-term affordability can be realized and maintained. The goal of the book and the discourse event “SELFMADE CITY” is to offer new impulses, present potentials and to discuss the fields of action.
