Cinema of the Future, Workshop at Aedes Campus, Berlin

Berlin is Germany’s cinema capital with its large variety of different programmes and events, in particular the International Film Festival Berlin. Yet there are numerous challenges facing the city’s cinema landscape today. The ANCB-Series Cinema of the Future aims at initiating a continuous debate on the subject of cinema in public urban space, by exploring on-the-ground situations in Berlin through architecture design studios informed by specialist input talks and debates as well as by evaluating and publicly presenting the outcomes. After examining the role of the cinema in the future urban public space of the city by exploring urban-architectural opportunities in 2010, and expanded socio-cultural and socio-economic programmes in 2011, Cinema of the Future 2012 focuses on the future of the independent arthouse cinema as a critical element of the city’s cultural offering using the Eiszeit Cinema in Berlin-Kreuzberg as a case study.
Design Studio: The symposium will kick off and inform a ten-day design studio with the University of Pennsylvania, led by Winka Dubbeldam with Todd Costain and the Technical University Braunschweig led by Almut Grüntuch-Ernst with Luis Berriós-Negrón and Kristien Ring. The participants will conduct both on-site research and design work at the ANCB studio space to develop an analysis of the urban context and propose an architectural/urban intervention for the Eiszeit cinema and its surroundings.

Symposium
Local agents will join specialists from different fields to debate the positioning of cinema in urban public space with regard to questions such as: How can an independent cinema survive in a climate of ever-growing competition both financially and in terms of programmatic profile? Can a cinema activate a neighbourhood and integrate different uses and users? How can the cinema reach out to the fast changing social landscape of Kreuzberg when inhabitants feel often threatened by urban upgrading measures?
